Anna needs a best friend because she is a very sad cookie. So this is Sean! Honestly I haven’t really specified anything but that his name is Sean, which can be changed. I envisioned him being a goofy geek like Anna but also very outgoing and loud. He loves to go out every night and enjoy the Miami experience. He is a wild child! Which is the exact opposite of Anna. He brings her out of her shell. When she doesn’t want to get out of bed at midnight to go out skinny dipping in the ocean with a bunch of his friends, he will literally drag her ass out of bed and throw her over his shoulder if he has to.

I kind of envisioned him being gay just because it would get rid of the intimidation of talking to a guy for Anna, but he really doesn’t have to be. We can come up with something, like they met in elementary school and he moved away but they kept in touch over the years. Although I think it would be fun if he was gay because I just see them having fun cheesy moments together lol. He is also her savior when he needs to be, and I'm seeing somewhat protective over her because she is really innocent to the world for a 24 year old.

Face is open, the picture above is Adam Gallagher. History is open. Age is pretty open, keep him under 30 but over 20. I really don’t see a relationship between these two so I would prefer if he didn’t have a crush on her or anything, and it will be the same for her. I just see them having a kind of sibling relationship. If you are making a guy, please consider taking him! He is really open.

According to the obnoxious ticking clock in the waiting room, it was already 10:14 at night. Anna still had seven more hours to go until her shift was up. On any average day, a shift like this wouldn’t bother her. But tomorrow just so happened to be her midterm which she was not only dreading, but not prepared for at all. Sure she had studied in her spare time just as she always did, but if anyone knew Anna they knew that spare time was a rare occurrence in her busy lifestyle. Thankfully, she had been able to switch with one of the usual night shift receptionist so that she could study while not helping patients or family members when they walked through the doors. Plus with an additional receptionist working, Anna didn’t have to worry about handling everything on her own. So her pessimism towards the upcoming test wasn’t completely in the gutter. There was still some hope to be had.

On one side of her desktop keyboard sat her glasses and blue Tardis traveler’s coffee mug, filled with extra expresso coffee that her mother had taught her to make. She had always called it ‘Wake the Dead Coffee,’ and for good reason. This particular drink had gotten Anna through some seemingly endless shifts at the hospital and also some late night cramming for schoolwork. On the right side of the keyboard sat her overstuffed notebook, and her colorfully tabbed Advanced Anatomy textbook. Reaching up, she tugged her ponytail out and ran her fingers through her hair to pull back any fallen tendrils before pulling it back up into a loose bun. She snatched her glasses from off the desk and slipped them onto her face. She was a girl on a mission tonight and nothing would break her concentration.

April 2014

”Okay, don’t move.” Anna spun around, her pink floral dress spinning along with the momentum of her turn. She flitted away from her mother, leaving the elderly woman nestled in the bright yellow chair that her daughter had brought from home when she’d made the move from house to nursing home.

”Should I cross my legs?” Peggy’s aged and arthritic fingers tugged at the bottom of her thick cream colored dress feeling uncomfortable in front of the camera staring at her from across the room.

”Whatever you want.” The words were tossed around the side of the camera as Anna intently tinkered with the device she’d grown used to working with over the past few months.

Peggy nervously tugged at the corners of her faded, thin hair. Still a subtle shade of copper even with the threat of white from age. ”Maybe I should pull my hair back. The curls might fall out.” The woman’s experienced eyes danced around the room, avoiding any and all contact with the giant black eye staring shamelessly at her. ”Or should I change my dress? Is this too dull?”

”Mom.” The young woman straightened herself up behind the setup of her tripod, a soft smile spreading over her lips as her vibrant blue gaze fell on the woman across the room from her. The older woman had gotten ready on her own, curled her short hair with loose curls, and applied the tiniest bit of eyeliner magnifying her matching baby blues. A soft shade of pink colored her lips and on the apples of her cheeks was a hint of blush. She looked so small in that massive chair that her father had used to love sitting in on the lazy days which were so rare in her house when she was younger. ”You look beautiful.” With that she pressed a pink tipped finger against the button, sending a red light flashing in the corner of the screen as she began to record.

January 2014

”Oh my gosh would you get away from the camera!”

”Hello there viewers! I’m officially the coolest person in the world and I’m here to talk about my bestie Anna! Come here.” Sean extended his arm around the camera to grab ahold of Anna’s arm and coax her around into the view of the camera.

Anna let out a sigh and shook her head giggling as she attempted to pull herself away from her companion. ”It’s my class they know what I look like, now focus!”

The man laughed and settled back in the uncomfortable green chairs set up in one of the break rooms in the University of Miami Hospital. ”Fine. I met Mouse,” Anna cleared her throat and gave Sean a glare from beside the camera. He shot her a glare right back. ”What I can’t call you Mouse in front of your classmates?” The man straightened up and returned his attention to the camera. ”I met Mouse about three…no, four years ago when she first started attending classes here. She was so scared she ran into a patient’s room where I happened to be taking his blood pressure in, and she had the nerve to start having a panic attack! So I sat her down on the extra bed, took old man Herman’s juice box and gave it to her and talked her down from an epic breakdown. I got her laughing and from then on out we just became good friends.” Sean smiled and clapped his hands together leaning forward just enough to whisper to the camera. ”Since you all have class with her I’m sure you know why I call her Mouse.”

From behind the camera a rolled up pack of plastic eating utensils flew out and hit Sean in the shoulder just as he failed at his attempt to dodge it. The man continued his laughter and sat back up straight in the chair. ”It took a long ass time to get this girl to get comfortable around me. She is probably the shyest person I’ve ever met in my entire life. And she’s as quiet as a mouse.” A devious grin flashed over his features and he glanced beside the camera where Anna was prepped to throw another pack of utensils at him. His hands shot up to shield himself for the threat that never came. ”But…” He gave her a look begging for truce. ”After she opened up I really got to know who Anna Maria James is. She is goofy, she’s a straight up nerd out of Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter or whatever she’s really into that I am definitely not, she is a crazy girl that will do some pretty strange stuff to get you laughing like sticking cucumbers to her glasses during spa night.” A heavy sigh could be heard from behind the camera followed by a barely audible ’Oh my God’

”She’s also one of…no…the nicest person I’ve been around in all my twenty-seven years. She’s got a heart of gold and she won’t hesitate to drop whatever she is doing to help a stranger. She is my best friend and I’d do anything for her and I know she’d return the favor.” He smiled and gave a nonchalant shrug. ”And she deserves an A in this class for sure because she has turned down so many nights of drinking…” Anna shouted at Sean from behind the camera as he continued. ”and partying and hooking u…” The woman finally got a hold of the record button and stopped the video. She pushed the tripod aside and stared at her friend with narrowed eyes. Sean stood up and stretched, giving a glance at his invisible watch. ”Welp would you look at the time. I’m late for…something or other.”

February 2014

”Miss James is determined. She’s definitely one of my best students, and she is an incredible nurse.” Dr. Mardoyan stood in the hallway of the hospital with her hands linked in front of her refusing to look at the eye of the camera but instead, those of her student behind it. ”Anna has been working with us for a little over four years now. All her patients have nothing but nice things to say about her and that she is always there when they need her.” The woman’s gaze strayed to a passerby in the hallway and gave the other woman a smile and a nod before returning her undivided attention to Anna. ”To be honest I don’t think I have ever been at the hospital when Anna isn’t. She practically lives here. I don’t even know where she finds the time. But I congratulate her on that because she knows what she wants and she is determined to get there fast and strong. A doctorates in medicine is not easy to get and she is well on her way to getting there if she keeps this up!” The woman gave a steady nod and a genuine smile. Anna thanked her and allowed the doctor to continue on her way.

April 2014

”My little Annie was born December 20, 1990. She was two months premature, and I was at the time a forty four year old woman that had just given birth to her first child. You see my husband, Edgar and I, had tried for many years to have a child and it just…never happened. We knew that it was a miracle when we found out about her. There was no option of that abortion, or anything of the sort. She was ours the moment the doctor said pregnant. Edgar and I knew the risks but we didn’t care.”

”Anyway, when she was born she had to be put on a breathing machine.”

Anna jumped in from the background for her mother. ”Endotracheal tube.” Peggy gave her daughter a smile and a nod of thanks before continuing. ”She wasn’t on it for long. I think it took me longer to recover than her. But she was a tough cookie and she pulled through with no problems at all.”

”Now Edgar was a teacher, and I was a stay at home mother so there was never a lot of money to be had but we made it work. We lived in a small house in South Miami. Never owned a car. We either took the bus or walked. Annie loved our walks together. We would always take the scenic routes even though they were added miles. Neither of us cared. They were our time to relax and spend time together. Anna was always a shy child. That may have been my fault, I didn’t socialize her as much as I should have when she was a toddler. She was just my baby and I didn’t want to share her I guess.” The older woman chuckled and pressed her lips. ”It got a bit better in high school. She had a good friend, oh what was her name? Sally?”

”Oh right! Sarah. Such a sweet girl. She was a cheerleader and always invited my little Annie out wherever she went.”

”Mom…I hated Sarah. She was a bully.”

”Hating people is like burning down your own house to get rid of a rat, Anne.”

Anna evaded her mother’s eyes, instead finding refuge in the white ceiling of the room without fully rolling them as the woman brought in a quote she’d been using all her life. ”I strongly disliked her.”

The elderly woman simply hummed, avoiding her daughters comment before continuing. ”She was in band. Played the clarinet! I’ll tell you I had to bite my knuckles to prevent myself from throwing that instrument out. She was good at it but she played it so much, Edgar and I thought we’d go deaf in that little house of ours! Unfortunately the deafness came from the old age not her clarinet playing.” Peggy’s gaze fell to her lap where her thumbs had been twiddling ever since she’d began this little biography of her daughter. ”I have to say my only regret to having Anna when we were already older is possibly not being able to see her grow up. She’s twenty-four now but there is still so much she needs to do. Become a doctor, fall in love, get married, have children…” Peggy hesitated, unable to continue. Anna sat silently behind the camera, watching her mother unfold before her. Though they had been so close throughout the young woman’s life, her mother had never spoken about these concerns to her.

”Edgar had a massive heart attack when Anna was sixteen. He died instantly at the ripe age of seventy. He might be missing it in person, but I know he’s somewhere leaning back in a recliner looking down at her and feeling just as much pride for her as I do.” Finally, Peggy’s watering eyes found the camera, and as if she changed her mind, they flashed over to her daughters whose silent tears had already begun to fall. ”Well I think that’s enough, wouldn’t you say?” Anna wiped at her tears and gave a nod of agreement. ”Yeah mom. That’s enough.”
